Topological materials discovery from crystal symmetry

چکیده
Topological materials discovery has evolved at a rapid pace over the past 15 years following identification of first nonmagnetic topological insulators (TIs), crystalline (TCIs), and 3D semimetals (TSMs). Most recently, through complete analyses symmetry-allowed band structures - including theory Quantum Chemistry (TQC) researchers have determined crystal-symmetry-enhanced Wilson-loop symmetry-based indicators for phases, leading to higher-order TCIs TSMs. The recent application TQC related methods high-throughput revealed that half all known stoichiometric, solid-state, are Fermi level, 85% stoichiometric host energetically isolated bands, just under $2/3$ bands in carry stable topology TI or TCI. In this Review, we survey electronic solids from prediction 2D TIs recently introduced facilitated large-scale searches materials. We also discuss future venues manipulation solid-state charge-density-wave compounds, magnetic materials, few-layer devices.

Symmetry-protected topological photonic crystal in three dimensions
Topology of electron wavefunctions was first introduced to characterize the quantum Hall states in two dimensions discovered in 1980 (ref. 1). Over the past decade, it has been recognized that symmetry plays a crucial role in the classification of topological phases, leading to the broad notion of symmetry-protected topological phases2. As a primary example, topological insulators3,4 are distin...
متن کاملDirac mass generation from crystal symmetry breaking on the surfaces of topological crystalline insulators.
The tunability of topological surface states and controllable opening of the Dirac gap are of fundamental and practical interest in the field of topological materials. In the newly discovered topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), theory predicts that the Dirac node is protected by a crystalline symmetry and that the surface state electrons can acquire a mass if this symmetry is broken. Rec...
متن کاملTopological Crystalline Insulators and Topological Superconductors: From Concepts to Materials
In this review, we discuss recent progress in the explorations of topological materials beyond topological insulators; specifically, we focus on topological crystalline insulators and bulk topological superconductors. The basic concepts, model Hamiltonians, and novel electronic properties of these new topological materials are explained. The key role of symmetries that underlie their topologica...

متن کاملBreaking of Topological Symmetry
The coupling of topological matter to topological Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions is considered and a model is presented. It is shown that, contrary to the two-dimensional case, this coupling may lead to a breaking of the topological symmetry. This means that the vacuum expectation values of the observables of the theory loose their invariance under small deformations of the metric while t...
